About Walking on Waves Surf School

Walking on Waves is a North Devon surf school based at Saunton Sands, founded on a passion for surfing, coaching, and sharing the best of the local coastline. With over 20 years of experience delivering surf lessons to all ages and abilities, we’ve helped thousands of people learn to surf in a safe, supportive environment.

The History of Walking on Waves

Walking on Waves was founded in 2003 by Sarah Whiteley, a British and European surf champion who competed at national and international level. After years of competition and coaching, Sarah set out to create a surf school focused on quality instruction, safety, and genuine progression.

The surf school began simply — operating from a white Sherpa van with a small selection of boards and wetsuits. As demand for surf lessons at Saunton Sands grew, Walking on Waves expanded in 2008 with a dedicated beach-side storage unit, allowing lessons to run more efficiently and consistently.

In 2012, the business continued to grow with the opening of a surf hire shop in Croyde, offering equipment hire for surfers of all levels. Two years later, a permanent decking and meeting area was built at Saunton Sands, giving customers a comfortable place to prepare for lessons and gather before and after surf sessions. It was now when young instructor Jack Banks was taking on more responsibility in the business along side manager Max Shepherd.

Later down the line in 2021, Walking on Waves was rebranded with new logos, colours and fresh paint on the decking along with an inside office space. Jack was then made a partner in the business, with his friend Jimmy Challis along side as manager.

2023 hits a new era for Walking on Waves Surf School with the development of the hut that you see today. Creating more indoor storage and changing space while introducing a fresh new look.

Now the beginning of an exciting new chapter. In 2025 Jack bought Sarah out of her shares in the business and is now the sole owner of Walking on Waves. Jack, Jimmy, their main man Frank, and the team, continue to provide the highest standards of surf coaching and customer care.
